Community Leader of the Year
2024/2025
Dato’ Dr Ismail bin Hj. Parlan
Forest Research Institute Malaysia

A great enterprise doesn’t just cultivate crops; it nurtures people, communities, and futures. Sawit Kinabalu stands as a crown jewel of Sabah’s economic landscape. Established in 1996 under the Sabah state government, Sawit Kinabalu Group rises as a symbol of Sabah’s economic sovereignty, safeguarding the environment, and enduring legacy. It is the lifeblood of Sabah’s agrarian economy.

Challenges are the best teachers. For Datuk Victor, Managing Director and CEO, each hurdle has been a stepping stone, sculpting a leadership philosophy rooted in inclusivity, integrity, and sustainability. Under his vision, Sawit Kinabalu has evolved into Sabah’s premier state-owned investment powerhouse with an agricultural empire spanning over 67,000 hectares across five key regions, 36 estates, 7 mills, a refinery, and even ventures in cattle farming and eco-tourism, supported by 1,186 dedicated employees.
Sawit Kinabalu represents an ecosystem of opportunity. It operates through its core business of oil palm and diversified subsidiaries. Its strategic footprint from Tawau to Beaufort exemplifies a thriving ecosystem of plantations, mills, refineries, and innovative biotech endeavours. Sawit Kinabalu have invested heavily in biotechnology, developing high-yield clonal palm planting materials that boost productivity by more than 30%. They’ve preserved over 9,000 hectares of land for conservation zones, built orangutan bridges, and created artificial hornbill nests, small but meaningful acts that reflect a deeper truth: this company respects the land it depends on.
Real leadership is about walking the land you serve. Known for his hands-on approach, Datuk Victor visits estates regularly and listens closely to employees on the ground. Datuk Victor is a Sabahan at heart. He believes that the success of Sawit Kinabalu must translate into real impact for the people of Sabah. The company employs local communities, supports rural development, and plays a crucial role in the state’s economy.
The soul of Sabah lies in its people and land. As Datuk Victor believes, “The wealth of the land must feed the soul of the people.” His legacy will offer shade and strength for generations to come. In his hands, Sawit Kinabalu stands not as a giant that dominates, but as a platform that uplifts indigenous communities, empowering rural families, and nurturing the land that sustains them all.
